Have you decided that a Life Coach is for you? That’s awesome!
But how do you know you’re picking the right type of life coach? Well, let’s talk about the different types of coaches and how to pick the right one. While there are a plethora of types of coaches, we will be examining the “Big Seven” – the types you hear the most about.
Personal or Life Coaches– These coaches work with you to achieve life goals, work through mental blocks and achieve clarity. These types of coaches often have specific niches which vary greatly.
Relationship and Dating Coaches: These coaches focus on relationships and dating. They will help you focus on interpersonal skills and romance.
Empowerment Coaches: Empowerment coaches focus on overcoming specific obstacles. They will also have fairly specific niches which can vary widely.
Transformation Coaches: Sounds like what it is. They focus on Life transformation and change.
Health and Wellness Coaches: These coaches help with your relationship with your body. Be that keeping you on a good workout routine, a proper meal plan and everything in between. When it comes to the “physical stuff” these are the coaches you want to check out.
Executive Coaches: Executive and Performance coaches are working with executives, team leaders and office managers. They focus on leadership development and interpersonal skills.
Business Coaches: Business coaches work with business owners- big and small- to achieve business-related goals. Many entrepreneurs take on a business coach when they first start a new company.
And finally….
Group Coaches: These coaches work with small (or large) groups of people to maximize the number of people who can benefit from their specific service. While some coaches solely operate in a group setting, other coaches will offer a “group” option, depending on the service they offer.
So how do I determine what type of coach is right for me?
Well, ask yourself these questions:
What am I stuck on? What part of my life is causing me pain or discomfort? This first question will give you a LOT of clarity. If employment is an issue, a job coach may be a good fit. If personal image, traumatic experiences or relationships are the source of your discomfort, look into Personal Life Coaches or Empowerment coaches. (Side note: If trauma is an issue, there are coaches who specifically work with trauma and can provide Trauma-Informed Care. We will have another article on these special coaches later but something worth keeping in mind.)
One you’ve decided what type of coach you think will suit your needs, Google a few life coaches in your area. Many coaches offer virtual services as well, so if you find someone who isn’t local that you might like to work with, don’t hesitate to reach out.
Above all, do your research. Check out websites, reviews, social media platforms. Get a feel for each coach and who they serve. Reach out and schedule a consult call- some coaches offer free consults or Discovery Calls- and that gives you a session to get a feel for them, their style and how good a fit you are.
